Introducing The Mighty MAF Sensor
Meet the full name Mass Air Flow Sensor, or simply put, the MAF sensor. This little device may go by different names like air meter or MAF, but its purpose remains the same - to measure the amount of air entering your engine. And trust us when we say, it plays a crucial role.
Why is it so important, you ask? Well, let's dive into it. The MAF sensor provides vital information to the ECU or PCM, allowing it to calculate the perfect balance of fuel for that optimal air-fuel ratio. Without this valuable data, the ECU would struggle to control fuel injection, leaving your engine in a bit of a pickle. You might experience rough idling or, in the worst-case scenario, your engine might refuse to start at all.
The MAF Sensor May Be Malfunctioning In The Following Cases
There are several symptoms of MAF sensor failure, but not all of them are immediately obvious:
- Check that the engine light is on: Performance and circuit diagnostic fault codes may be directly related to the MAF sensor, but fuel adjustment and fire codes can also be associated with the MAF sensor.
- Failure acceleration: If you experience problems accelerating into a highway or passing, ECM may limit injection due to MAF sensor issues.
- Idle speed: Without the right amount of fuel, it is difficult to achieve a smooth idle speed. If there is a problem with the MAF sensor, the engine may not run smoothly, especially when idling.
- Poor fuel economy: MAF sensors do not have to fail completely to affect fuel economy. If the ECM goes wrong, unnecessary fuel can be added, resulting in poor fuel economy.
- Black exhaust smoke: In some cases, the ECM may become so thick that black smoke comes out of the exhaust. This can also overload the catalytic converter.
- Hesitancy or surge: During acceleration or cruising, you may notice hesitancy or sudden abnormal power that can be disturbing.
- Hard to start: The engine needs more fuel to start than idling, but if the MAF sensor signal is skewed, the ECM may not order enough fuel injection to start the engine immediately.
How To Fix A Bad Air Flow Sensor
If your intake system is working well but you are still having problems, there are a few things you can try:
Shake off the dust. Blow out the intake pipe and install a new air filter to prevent future dust intrusion.
. Use cleaner. MAF sensor-specific cleaners may be able to handle any contamination.
Instead of it. If neither of these steps work, it is usually simple to replace a simple air flow sensor.
How To Clean The MAF Sensor
If we detect any anomalies and we know through diagnostics that the fault is coming from this device, we will visually check the different connections before disassembly. We will check the status of the cables, usually three, as well as the connectors themselves. If at first glance everything seems to be in order, then the inside of the sensor is probably contaminated, dirty beyond our comprehension.
Over time and kilometers the sensor may capture dirt and not transmit the right information, so it will not perform its function well. While the intake loop has an air filter before the MAF, there is a chance that some small elements "sneak in" and stay on the hot wire, as well as dirt, insects, or oil particles. When the values are recorded beyond the established parameters, it is likely that the engine in the frame of the alarm light will fail, and our car will also lose power.

In order to clean it up, we will continue to extract it. Depending on the car it is necessary to remove some staples or screws and of course we must also remove the air filter box itself. Let's not forget to "unplug" the connector which contains the air flow sensor. Extraction and extraction is also important to treat this element very gently, do not touch it directly, because it is very fragile, if the platinum wire breaks, it means that a new sensor must be purchased.
After extraction, we will perform an appearance check. If the thread breaks, as we say, we will have no choice but to buy a new MAF. To make it "as good as new", we will use a sulphate-resistant cleaning spray on electrical contacts normally sold by any spare parts store. We apply it to the entire area of the wire, and after a few seconds the wire should show gray again. We repeat: This small wire should not be touched by hand.
Later, we took the opportunity to wipe the air inside the pipe, because it must have dust, leaves or insect residues, as well as oil particles from the engine itself. Finally, we will reassemble everything and keep it as it is, don't forget to connect the sensors and handle the sensors carefully.
