EnglishThe mass air flow sensor (MAF) plays a crucial role in the electronic fuel injection system of a car. Positioned between the air filter and the engine's intake manifold, the MAF measures the volume of air flowing into the engine intake. By accurately determining the air mass, the MAF helps calculate the optimal air-fuel ratio (AFR) for the engine.
It's important to note that there are various types of air flow sensors, each requiring different maintenance. Digital sensors generate a frequency output, whereas analog mass air flow sensors produce a variable voltage output. Both outputs are sent to the engine control module, which assists in regulating the air-fuel mixture in the car's automatic transmission system. Some cars also incorporate the intake air temperature (IAT) sensor within the mass air flow sensor.
The correct calculation of the air-fuel ratio is essential for the engine's performance. The ideal AFR is 14.7:1 (14.7 pounds of air to 1.0 pound of gasoline), although AFR values can vary based on driving conditions. During acceleration, a richer AFR of up to 12:1 may be required, while cruising may only require levels as lean as 22:1. A malfunctioning mass air flow sensor can hinder the engine control module's ability to accurately determine fuel injection, leading to a range of problems for your vehicle.
Over time, the mass air flow sensor can degrade and become susceptible to failure due to exposure to exhaust fumes, debris, and dust in the air. Even excessive dirt accumulation can cause the sensor to stop functioning properly. When the mass air flow sensor fails to provide an accurate signal to the powertrain control module (PCM), which manages the engine and transmission systems, the engine may receive too little or too much fuel. This can result in incomplete combustion, leading to rough engine running and misfiring.
If your car struggles to generate power and frequently stalls, it may be receiving excessive air and insufficient fuel. This can impede the combustion process, often caused by dirty buildup on the wires within the mass air flow sensor. An automotive maintenance professional can rectify this issue by restoring the wires to optimal condition.
