Fiber Optic Connectors

Fiber optic connector that comes in various configurations and types is considered as an important component for the fiber optic cable. Generally speaking, different fiber cable connector types can be categorized according to different standards like the utilization, fiber count, fiber mode, transmission method, the transmission media, the boot length, the polishing type and the termination way, etc. Follow this article to classify fiber connector types.
 

Functions of fiber optic connectors


There are several functions of fiber optic connectors. With the development of various connector styles, each has its own advantages, disadvantages, and capabilities, aligning the fiber with emitters in transmitters, adjacent fibers in splices, and photodetectors in receivers. There are four basic components of fiber optic connectors, namely the ferrule, connector body, cable, and coupling device.

  • Alignment: Precisely align fiber cores for optimal signal transmission.
  • Connection/Disconnection: Enable secure fiber connections and disconnections.
  • Signal Integrity: Maintain signal quality and minimize loss.

  • Versatility: Adapt to various fiber types and network needs.
  • Ease of Use: Simplify installation and removal processes.
 

Types of fiber connector


Connecting fiber cables using optical connectors such as LC, SC, MTP, MPO, and ST requires an adapter panel. These connectors are found in data centers, telecommunications rooms, enterprise networks, and so on.
 
lc fiber connector
 
A Lucent Connector (LC), as one SFF (small form factor) connector, possesses a 1.25 mm ferrule. They are popular in datacommunications since they have a small footprint, and they are ideal for high density applications due to their small footprint. There is a growing trend of switching to high-efficiency cabling with LC fiber optic connectors nowadays. LC fiber optic connectors are currently considered the most popular connectors.

The SC fiber connector was the first to be chosen for the TIA-568 standard and latches with a simple push-pull motion. "SC" stands for "Square Connector" due to the square shape of the connector body. The SC fiber optic connector has a 2.5mm ferrule, which is twice as large as the LC connector. This connector is ideal for datacommunications and telecom applications such as point-to-point and passive optical networking. The fiber optic SC connector remains the second most popular connector for polarization maintaining applications because of its excellent performance.
 
MTP/MPO Fiber Connector
 
Unlike the previous two fiber optic connectors, the MTP/MPO fiber connector is a multi-fiber connector and larger than other connectors. It combines 12 to 24 fibers in a single rectangular ferrule. High-bandwidth optical parallel connections are often made with this connector. MTP/MPO fiber connectors are complex due to issues associated with keying up and keying down and males and females. ST Connector
 
After the arrival of the FC type, AT&T developed and licensed the ST (Straight Tip) fiber optic connector. With a ceramic, spring-loaded 2.5mm ferrule that remains firmly in place with a half-twist bayonet mount, the ST optical connector holds the fiber. Long- and short-distance applications, such as campus and building fiber applications, corporate network environments, and military applications, are usually used.
 
FC Connector
 
FC fiber optic connectors are referred to as Ferrule Connectors. The FC fiber optic connector was the first optical fiber connector to use ceramic ferrules. In contrast to plastic-bodied SC and LC connectors, it has a round screw-type fitting made of nickel or stainless steel. Using a threaded collet, the FC fiber optic connector end face is secured to the adapter/jack using an alignment key. In spite of the increased complexity in manufacturing and installation, FC connectors are still available for precision instruments such as OTDRs and single mode fibers. The ST and FC connectors were originally intended for datacoms and telecoms applications, but have been less common since the SC and LC fiber optic connectors were introduced. Their use has declined in recent years.
 
There are five types of fiber optic connectors, which are introduced in order of their popularity from wide to usual. The figure below shows the different connector styles:
 
 LC vs SC vs MTP vs ST vs FC Connector
 
MT-RJ Connector
 
Male and female versions of the Mechanical Transfer Registered Jack (MT-RJ) connector are available. The connector aligns with pins and has a plastic housing, and the metal guide pins and plastic ferrules ensure accurate alignment. The MT-RJ connector has a slightly smaller size than a standard phone jack, making it easier to connect and disconnect. Furthermore, MT-RJ fiber optic connectors provide a lower termination cost and greater density for both electronics and cable management hardware.
 
MU Connector
 
There is a 1.25mm ferrule on this miniature SC. With a compact miniature body and a push-pull design, the MU fiber optic connector is ideal for multiple optical connectors and a self-retentive mechanism for backplane applications. With FS, you can get MT-RJ/MU fiber optic connectors customized for high power.
 
DIN Connector
 
In a DIN connector, pins are arranged in a circular pattern. Typically, a full-sized DIN connector has three to 14 pins with a diameter of 13.2 millimeters and plugs into an interface to connect devices. These connectors are used for PC keyboards, MIDI instruments, and other specialized equipment.
 
E2000 Connector
 
E2000 Connectors are push-pull coupling mechanism with dust and laser beam protection. One-piece design for easy and quick termination, E2000 fiber optic connectors are used for high safety and high power applications.
 

Inspecting fiber optic connectors


As a means of diagnosing any problems or checking the quality of the termination procedure of fiber optic connectors, a fiber optic microscope is used. Prior to examining a fiber optic connector, you should always clean it with specialized fiber optic cleaning products as instructed by the manufacturer. By tilting the connector or by illuminating the angle of the connector, the microscope will allow you to inspect the connector from any angle you choose.

In order to ensure that the connector is in good condition, it should have a smooth finish without scratches, and there should be no signs of cracks or chips on the fiber, where it is either pulling back into the ferrule or protruding from the end of the connector.
 

Fiber optic connectors and safety


The fiber end face of a connector should never be touched, as a safety precaution. Before looking at it in a microscope, workers should always make sure there is no power present. If a connector is damaged, it should be discarded. Always keep unused connectors covered with a plastic dust cap.
