According to the report, Tesla began to purchase positive electrode rolls produced by two second-tier battery companies in China in the second half of 2023, and shipped them to the German factory to produce 4680 batteries. Tesla had also wanted to purchase positive coils (components for battery cells) from Ningde Times and BYD's battery division, but they were rejected. Because they want Tesla to be able to buy the entire battery directly, it is rare to purchase only the positive electrode rolls, and battery companies usually make the entire battery on the same dust-free production line. Moreover, polar rolls require high sealing to be transported, special packaging is required, and batteries need to be made in a short period of time, as typical polar rolls have quality problems after sitting for about 1 week.
It is reported that in ordinary cylindrical batteries, the cell is mainly composed of positive electrode, negative electrode, electrolyte and diaphragm. Among them, the positive and negative electrode materials are pastes, which are coated on the metal diaphragm to form a pole sheet, and the positive electrode roll is the rolled positive electrode sheet. As a part of the battery cell, the positive electrode coil accounts for about 35% of the total cost of the battery.
Not long ago, some media quoted informed sources as saying that a major bottleneck in the mass production of Cybertruck is that the 4680 battery carried can not keep up with the mass production speed.
When Tesla used the new dry coating technology to produce the 4680 battery, it encountered serious problems with the dry coating technology of the negative battery, and the 4680 battery negative is also the most expensive part of the battery. However, the battery dry coating technology can reduce Tesla's equipment expenditure per unit of production capacity by one-third, and reduce the floor space and energy consumption of the electrode production plant by 90%.
Tesla pointed out in 2020 that dry coating technology would be one of the main factors in halving battery costs, cutting investment and making smaller batteries for vehicles such as the upcoming compact Model 2.
However, the battery dry coating technology has been shown to be faster than traditional wet coating solutions when tested on smaller batteries in the laboratory, but its use in large-scale industrial production is still unknown. Battery companies have been using the wet process for decades.
Tesla's battery development problem this time is that using dry coating technology to mass-produce batteries generates a lot of heat, according to one source, which melts the glue that holds the dry coating to the cathode, eventually turning it into a large sticky object.
Tesla, as an international leading electric vehicle company, has a greater demand for batteries, and accelerating battery production is crucial. It is reported that to meet the production of Cybertruck, it would need to produce nearly 1 million batteries per day to meet the demand, and it would take more than 11 days to produce such a number of batteries. It is estimated that the current production rate of 4,860 batteries in the Texas factory is only enough to equip about 24,000 Cybertrucks a year, which is about one-tenth of the truck production required by Tesla.
On the revenue contribution of Cybertruck to Tesla, analysts said they do not expect the company to see the vehicle generate positive cash flow for the next 12 to 18 months.
At the same time, some Tesla cars will no longer enjoy the United States car enterprise tax credits, the United States government announced that from January 2024, if the United States production of electric vehicles containing Chinese-made or assembled battery components, the car will no longer enjoy up to $7,500 tax credits, Cybertruck just shipped, is still on the credit list. Eliminated from January 2024, including Tesla's Model 3, also no longer eligible for tax credits.
